While patients needing heart donations still drastically outnumbers the available organs for transplants recent changes in guidelines for transplantation have made the procedure available for an even wider patient population.

Nir Uriel, MD, MSc, from the University of Chicago discussed some of these guideline changes and what they can mean to helping even more patients during the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in Chicago. One of the biggest changes in the guidelines is looking more carefully at the potential patients getting donation and whether they are the ideal candidate for the procedure. Uriel was also proud to see a change in the approach to patients who are HIV positive. Under the new guidelines patients with well controlled HIV can now be eligible for transplant.
