Maureen Mealy: Moving Treatment of NMO Forward

While the work being done to find a treatment for neuromyelitis optica is encouraging those in the field know they have not yet found a cure for the condition and that the agents being investigated will not help reverse the damage already done, which can be discouraging at times.

Specializing in treating this condition Maureen A. Mealy, RN, BSN, MSCN, of Johns Hopkins Medicine said she continues to be inspired by her patients who navigate through difficult symptom management as they await the approval of medication designed for their condition. Even with blindness and paralysis as two of the most difficult symptoms Mealy said pain management remains a greater problem for many patients.
