Looking at the History of the Opioid Epidemic and its Future

When opioids first hit the market they were specifically promoted for their non-addictive traits. Over the past few decades that has been disproven as doctors look for the best way to treat patients and avoid the risk of unwanted addiction and other issues.

Looking at the history of the epidemic, John M. Stamatos, MD, from the Northwell Health System said a lot of the problems started with people not paying enough attention to the prescribing process which brought on the greater problem. Stamatos said new guidelines and more attention to detail can help address the problem going forward while working to help patients with prior problems.
