While most elective procedures have been canceled and many practices have temporarily closed as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), many ophthalmology practices find themselves in a unique and difficult situation.

With so many ophthalmic procedures directly tied to a patient’s quality of life, some patients may be reluctant to cancel and delay injections or other procedures that may require a specific treatment interval.

Due to the nature of treating ophthalmic conditions and how they require close contact with patients, our sister publication Ophthalmology Times reached out to Rishi Singh, MD, of the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, for more perspective on steps to take to protect ophthalmologists and their patients.
