In the field of oncology the use of targeted medications is becoming more commonplace to address various conditions. Research is being done in other areas of medicine, including psychiatry to see if there is more that can be done to address this patient population as well.

Sander Markx, MD, from Columbia University discussed his lab's work in this field during the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting in Atlanta. While Markx's research has focused on smaller patient populations including Amish and Mennonites Markx said it is the start of what could lead to a much larger field to treat people with a variety of psychiatric conditions.
